Tariff Calculator MCP by Gateway Lines
Model Context Protocol

Ask your AI what your imports actually cost

The first tariff calculator MCP from a licensed ocean freight carrier.

Connect the Gateway Tariff Calculator MCP to Claude or ChatGPT and duty questions get answered by a live tariff engine instead of the model guessing from training data. Real HTS lines, every trade action that stacks, and the citation behind each one.

Free. 10 lookups per week with an email address, unlimited for Gateway freight customers.

What it returns

It knows what a rule does before it does it

Ask about metal furniture from Canada today and the honest answer is zero percent. Ask what happens on August 19 and it is fifty. A model working from training data gives you one of those numbers and no way to tell which.

This is the actual response, citation included. Every figure traces to the live Harmonized Tariff Schedule and the published action behind it.

Setup

Connect in about a minute

One URL and one header. The email is how we meter guest access and it is the only thing we ask for.

One command in your terminal. Works today.

claude mcp add --transport http gateway-tariff \
  https://mcp.gatewaylines.com \
  --header "X-Gateway-Email: [email protected]"

Using the Claude or ChatGPT apps?

Both connect over sign-in rather than a pasted header, and that flow is being built now. Their connector dialogs have no field for the header above, so use one of the config-file clients until it lands, or tell us to ping you when sign-in is live.

Already ship with Gateway?

Customers get unlimited lookups. One-click sign-in is landing shortly, so you will connect by logging into your Gateway account instead of pasting anything. Until then, use the email above or tell us you want it and we will lift the limit on your address.

Tools

Three tools, all read only

Tariff data only. The server holds no shipment records and cannot reach a customer account.

landed_cost

US import duty and landed cost for an HTS code and country of origin.

Returns the base duty plus every trade action that applies (Section 301, Section 232, Section 338, AD/CVD and the rest), government fees, and the total. Give it a product description instead of a code and it returns candidate classifications to confirm rather than pricing a guess. That step is free.

classify_hts

Candidate HTS classifications for a product.

Official descriptions and base duty rates from the US Harmonized Tariff Schedule, ranked by match. Candidates, not a ruling: the schedule classifies by what an article is, not what it is made of.

policy_changes_since

What changed in US trade policy, and what is coming.

New actions, rate changes, effective dates and expirations, each carrying its source. This is the tool that lets an assistant answer "what should I know before I ship next month".

Guest

10 lookups per rolling 7 days, per email address. No account, no card.

Gateway freight customer

Unlimited. The platform comes with the freight; we earn on the container, not the software.

The engine that prices our own freight

Not a separate demo dataset. The same tariff engine behind every Gateway quote, run by an FMC-licensed NVOCC and ocean freight forwarder.

Sourced to the primary record

Rates and effective dates trace to the USITC Harmonized Tariff Schedule, the Federal Register, USTR and CBP guidance.

Kept current as actions land

Policy changes are published to our changelog with their effective dates, which is the same feed the tools read.

Figures returned by these tools are planning estimates calculated from the live US Harmonized Tariff Schedule and published trade actions. They are not a customs ruling. Classification is the importer's legal responsibility and should be confirmed with a licensed customs broker before entry. See the tariff policy updates.
